While DIY ceramic coating kits are available, professional installation is recommended for optimal results. Our main talking point when it comes to DIY coatings is that it is not necessarily hard to understand how to apply it, but you can mess it up quite easily and the fix for that type of mistake is lengthy and costly.
The application time for ceramic coatings varies depending on the size of the vehicle, the type of coating you are getting installed, and what needs to be done to the vehicle before the coating is applied. Typically, it can take anywhere from two to three days to complete the process. Preparation usually takes one to two days, while applying the coating takes a few hours. Proper curing can require up to 24-48 hours.
The construction or makeup of a ceramic coating allows it to do three things inherently better than a wax or sealant. First, the coating offers a highly repellant surface where dirt and contaminants are rejected instead of absorbed into the surface. This makes cleaning a lot easier. Second, it is capable of actually bonding with the surface instead of just sitting on top of it which allows the ceramic to last for years instead of just a few months that we were seeing from waxes and sealants. Lastly the coatings are able to withstand penetration of UV and harmful environmental contaminants to keep your paint finishes from degrading over time. We like to say ceramic coatings are wax on steroids, and they replace them as well.
Unfortunately there is a lot of myths and misinformation out there from irresponsible marketing techniques. Coatings are not thick enough nor hard enough to protect against a scratch or rock chip like paint protection film can. They do provide a slightly harder surface than your OEM paint but that thickness is measured in its ability to prevent UV damage and fading. We are asking coatings to prevent oxidation and paint fading, make your vehicle easier to clean, repel water and contaminants, and keep it looking shiny for years and years to come.
