Window tint laws vary widely by location. It’s essential to know your local laws to avoid fines. If you are wanting to go darker than the law allows, you are taking on that risk at your own discretion. There is a medical waiver you can get to be able to have “illegal” tint.

In Maryland, these rules differ between sedans and SUVs or vans.

Sedans
– Windshield: Only the top five inches or the area above the AS-1 line can have a non-reflective tint of 35% light transmission or lighter.
– Front side windows: Must let in more than 35% of light.
– Back side and rear windows: Must let in more than 35% of light.

SUVs and Vans
– Windshield: Same as sedans: non-reflective 35% tint allowed on the top five inches or AS-1 line.
– Front side windows: Must let in more than 35% of light.
– Back side and rear windows: Can be as dark as you want.

West Virginia is the same as Maryland other than WV requires an inspection every 2 years.

Pennsylvania differs in that your windows must let in more than 30% of light.

High-quality window tint won’t reduce visibility, day or night. In fact, it can improve your view by reducing glare. However, if you have a hard time seeing at night we do not recommend the darkest shades as it can minimize vision in the dark.
